Introduction

Friends and Colleagues,
Hereditary Antithrombin Deficiency (HD) presents specific challenges for patients,
their families, and their treating physicians and other health care providers. In this
interactive forum, HD is discussed with readers - patients, family members, physicians,
genetic counselors, and any other interested person. If you have questions or comments -
I invite you to post them.
If you are a patient, I also encourage you to download the
"Antithrombin Deficiency"
brochure written for patients, published by the non-profit patient organization National Alliance for
Thrombosis and Thrombophilia (NATT).

How do you ask a question?
If you would like to ask a question, please read the "Disclaimer & Terms of Use", then post your
question or comment. Questions are reviewed by GTC staff and me, answered by me, then posted
in the forum. The answers present my personal assessment and are not influenced by GTC. I am
responsible for the content of this Q/A section, but not for any other part of the website. GTC envisioned
this educational forum and provides the logistic support to make it possible.

I have read the Disclaimer & Terms of Use.
Who Am I?
I am a hematologist at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. I am a trained
Internist and Hematologist-Oncologist, with subspecialty training in Coagulation (blood
clotting). Most of my professional time is spent taking care of patients with blood
clots (thrombosis) and clotting disorders (thrombophilias), performing clinical research on
thrombosis, and teaching. Since 2001 I have written a Q/A section for patients on thrombosis
and thrombophilia on the patient education website www.fvleiden.org, and since 2003 I have
been the Chairman of the Medical and Scientific Advisory Board of the national non-profit
patient advocacy group for thrombosis and thrombophilia NATT.
Why am I doing this?
I am committed to providing the best clinical care to patients and their families with
thrombosis and clotting disorders. Patient education is, in my view, an integral part of patient
care. I believe that a patient who is knowledgeable about his/her medical problems has a
better health outcome and feels more in control of his/her disease. Through this Q/A forum I
hope to learn from patients and health care providers and, in return, contribute to patients' care.
